Just as Merida reaches the part of her explanation that may require her to accept betrothal for the greater good just as her mother did, effectively making her lesson about humility a permanent one…her mother tells her she should instead break tradition and do whatever she wants to. The film never calls her out on these qualities as negatives. Her attitude towards fixing the problem is likewise very detached from any emotional investment. But she’s STILL supposedly our heroine.
